Hundalee

Hundalee House is a modern mansion in Jedburgh parish, Roxburghshire, on the steep left bank of the river Jed, 1 1⁄2 mile S by W of Jedburgh town. A strong ancient peel tower of the Rutherfurds, destroyed in last century, stood on the estate of Hundalee; and Hundalee Cave, on the bank of the Jed, disappeared through a landslip in March 1881. - Frances Groome, Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland 1882-4

The Rutherfords of Hundalee

-1. Nicholas Rutherford of Yetholm and Grubet

Sir Richard de Ruthirfurde was the progenitor or direct ancestor of the Rutherfurds of Chatto, Edgerston, Hunthill, Hundalee, Fairnington and Fairnilee.

Nicholas witnessed for Sir Richard in 6/27/1424 concerning Lauder family lands at Swinside and Hownam - he used the family seal; "an orle, three martlets in chief"

served as bailie for William Douglas, Earl of Douglas

As Douglas' bailie he gave sasine of Wolle and Wolfhopelee to David Hume, witnessed by his son John Rutherford I of Hundalee, John Rutherford of Yetholm and James Rutherford of that Ilk in 7/31/1436

Signed a bond to serve Henry VIII 10/29/1544 when the English invaded Scotland during the "Rough Wooing"

9/16/1545 the English burned Hundalee House to the ground anyway

A feud between the Colville's of Ochiltree and the Douglas's originated in 1449, and was fought for many years. In 1502 Robert and Henry Douglas we ordered to labor, occupy and restore the lands of Farnesyde and Hardane, because of the oppression against Sir William Colville, and for the theft of oxen from Sir William Colville. Plus this wasn’t the last they saw of punishment. In the same year John and William Douglas were convicted of oppression and convocation of the lieges upon Sir William Colville, basically murdering Colville. Along with their conviction was George Haliburton for the part of slaughter of Sir William Colville of Ochiltree. In 1513, Sir Robert Colville, successor of William, was respected as a man of high character, and honored of his sovereign. He was the steward of  Queen Margaret and master to the household of James IV. He raised his standard at the Cross of Ochiltree and gathered his men at arms, who  had been called to support the King and ride with him onto English ground. The all perished at Flodden field and died with the King. In 1530, Sir James Colville transferred the barony of Ochiltree to Sir James Hamilton of Finnart and years later it was passed to Andrew Stewart, Lord Avondale. [see generation 8 below]

His widow, Princess Margaret Tudor married Sir Archibald Douglas, the Earl of Angus. She had been an English agent all her life in Scotland and soon converted the Earl of Angus to her beliefs. This brought national political changes to the Border Country. However, her son King James V grew up to hate the name of Douglas and despise his mother Margaret. The Ferniehirst Kerrs allied themselves with King James V while the Cessford Kerrs became followers of the Douglas. He represented Roxburgh in parliament in 1630.
His son Robert Ker of Crailing assumed the title of Baron of Jedburgh and he and his wife Christian Hamilton are buried in Jedburgh Abbey.

In Mr Archibald Porteous's recollection Dame Mary Rutherford, Lady Hundalee, stated on her deathbed:  "I see God never totally nor wholly casts off those whom he once takes by the hand, and who honestly indent with him; and if he seems to cast them off, it's only in their own apprehension, and for the tryall of their grace, and only for a while; and, in the meanwhile, His hand is under their head to support them, though they perceive it not at the time." - Robert Wodrow, Analecta, ii.25

From this generation onward the Kerr’s were buried in Jedburgh Abbey by right of their descent from Dame Mary Rutherford,
